Hues among Fires

Artwork: Darcy Shank

Hues among Fires

Bright hues found among fires
cascade from the trees high above
and float through the gusts
that bite your cheeks.

Cold white fades to sticky brown
and back again, until finally the
bright, hot, blinding sun emerges and
warmth hits your skin for the first time in months.

Fields become littered with the velvety shades
of pastels that dance when the sky sheds tears;
your lungs fill with a sickly sweet aroma
and buzzing insects find solace.

The blazing sun sinks into the horizon,
while laughter and playful screams
retreat into their cozy comforters
around the campfire that will soon resemble the forest.
